The Ugly Side of Passion

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010 Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

pas·sion [say pash-uhn]1
n:  Any powerful or compelling emotion or feeling, as love or hate.

Most of us think of our passion as the thing we love, the thing that makes us supremely happy. But passion is actually anything we have a strong compelling devotion toward, which can also include the negative.

At a morning Coffee Talk recently, I asked the women in the group how many of them spent time criticizing themselves.

“How often do you go over and over past events in your mind, or with your friends, wishing you’d done this or that differently, beating yourself up about how you handled a situation, or criticizing yourself for a decision you’ve made?”

Sadly, the answer around the table was a unanimous, “All the time.”

When you spend time doggedly agonizing over the past and all the ways you screwed up, the ugly side of passion has reared its head.

Stop and think about how much time you spend criticizing yourself. It’s sobering to realize that your devotion — your passion — has become focused on passing judgment on yourself instead of acknowledging and embracing The Amazing You™. The evidence is in how regularly you find fault in who you are.

Yikes! Would you let someone speak that critically about your friends?! I’ll bet not.

Stop focusing your energy on shredding yourself to bits! Instead, channel the beautiful side of passion. Re-direct all that energy and power toward unearthing and appreciating the things that make you wonderful and unique.

————-
Okay, admit it. What makes YOU wonderful? Come on, it’s practically anonymous on the Internet, you can tell us. You know you don’t hesitate to advertise a weakness (that’s such a girl thing, just quit it!)

Take a moment to share what makes you The Amazing You™!

Being Gentle as you Make Change

Friday, January 9th, 2009 Friday, January 9th, 2009

With the theme of New Beginnings and the spirit of the New Year in the air there’s no question that this is a time of change. The local gym that I go to is always a total gong show in January as everyone who’s ever thought about working out is there trying to start fresh and give themselves the healthy body they desire. What so many people miss however is that whenever you make change in your life, it’s not like flicking a light switch. You will not wake up, having not exercised for the past 5, 10, 15 years and begin a five day a week work-out regime from now to forever. You will be enthused and energetic in the short term, and then something will inevitably happen and you’ll miss a day, then you’ll miss two, then three, then you’ll think – ahh, screw this work out thing – I’m too busy to keep this up.

What I see happening too often when women try to make healthy change in their life is they take the ‘all or nothing approach’. You’re either leading the aerobics class, or, you never go to the gym. You have great intentions of a healthy diet, have two oreo cookies, beat yourself up, figure you’ve lost the battle and eat the whole box. This ‘all or nothing” b.s. doesn’t work. Here’s some tips on ensuring success for whatever changes you want to make this year.

1. Be gentle and kind to yourself as you attempt to change. You are going to fall off the wagon – it’s a given – and when you do, don’t beat yourself up, see it for what it is, a slip up, and get right back on the wagon. Don’t use a blip on the radar to give up all together.

2. Keep a record of your progress. It’s too easy for your ego to get you all wrapped up in keeping you dissatisfied with your progress. By keeping a record you can silence your ego and it’s ridiculous banter by looking back to how far you’ve come.

3. Get an accountability partner. If you can’t afford to hire a personal coach, business coach, personal trainer, wellness facilitator (depending on what changes you are making this year) get yourself an accountability partner.- click here to read an extended post on how to get a great partner.

4. Set a goal. It’s important for your sub-conscious mind, your ego and your motivation to ensure you know exactly what you’re working towards. Click here to read more about how to set effective goals.

Putting your oxygen mask on first

Friday, January 2nd, 2009 Friday, January 2nd, 2009

Over the holidays it’s not uncommon to do some traveling and in my case six international airports and an equal number of flights was no accident as I prepared to create my plan for 2009.  We’re all familiar with the infamous safety demonstration prior to a flight taking off, but, there is one of life’s greatest lessons hidden in that three minute recording.  ”In the case of a change in cabin pressure, an oxygen mask will drop from above…if you are traveling with those that require your assistance, please ensure you put your mask on first before attending to them.”

It’s not that we don’t know that without air to breathe we’ve got about four minutes of life left and in the case of an emergency, i.e. life and death, I’m confident that we will each attend to that fact.  But, what I’m suggesting for 2009 is that you put your oxygen mask on first, everyday, every moment, to ensure that whether it’s your personal or professional life – you are bringing life – you are bringing the best you.

Whether it’s the extra five minutes of sleep, the gym work-out that leaves you feeling powerful, arranging a babysitter so you can read a book for an hour or simply locking your bathroom door as you slip into a warm bath – put your oxygen mask on first.  Be selfishly selfless.  If you honour this way of being all year long, you’ll make great decisions, you’ll have great success and I guarantee you won’t regret it.
