Automatic Business Networking, Active Results
Thursday, August 27th, 2009Many business owners think they’ll be wasting time on activities on Twitter, Facebook and elsewhere that may not lead shortly to cash-in-hand. But you can avoid that if you have a system and keep a schedule.
Let’s imagine that your goal is just to build targeted web traffic. Let’s also assume you’ve already got a blog where you post at least somewhat regularly. Make sure you schedule time both for getting content and publishing. Don’t procrastinate.
Next, you create a Twitter account. From here, you post links from your blog automatically using third-party tools like Twitterfeed. You do the same thing with your Facebook and LinkedIn accounts using tools like Ping.fm. It’s sort of like being on several TV channels at the same time. People are clicking and coming to your website. It can be great exposure, but it can only happen if you take some time to do these things systematically.
Just like with other parts of your business, using the right tools and staying organized will help ensure your social networking efforts meet the goals that you set.

However, the caveat with social media such as blogs, twitter & facebook is that they really only work if they are interactive. By posting automatically and not responding to other social media users, you are really just blurting ads. People may come once or twice to read your blog but unless you interact with those people they won’t keep coming back.
Imagine a store that has good quality product at a great price. You may go a few times but if the store clerks ignore you or hardly smile at you when they ring in your purchase, there isn’t any reason for them to continue participating. If they find a store with similar products and a friendly, sociable staff they will start shopping there.
The song from “Cheers” said it all, “Sometimes you want to go where everybody knows your name”.
Schedule time too, to read and interact with those who post comments to your blog and those who respond to your twitter feed. Remember it is interactive – not a one way conversation.
